Across the 50 US states plus territories, which states concentrate the largest absolute volume of H-1B visa petitions, and how does petition volume correlate with the number of unique sponsoring employers in each state?
Methodology
We queried the PlainVisa states table at server render time and pulled the columns state_name, certified_petitions, total_workers, total_employers, avg_wage. The query ranks records by certified_petitions DESC and returns the top 10. Every numeric value rendered on this page derives from a live SELECT against the production states table, no figure is hardcoded, and the table refreshes whenever the underlying U.S. Department of Labor and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services dataset is reingested.
Column lineage: each field maps to a typed column in the states table. Identifier columns carry the entity slug or code used elsewhere in PlainVisa; quantitative columns store values as exported by the U.S. Department of Labor and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (preserving the original measurement unit). Where the source publishes values in thousands of dollars, we render them via the standard PlainVisa money formatter that converts to billions or millions depending on magnitude. H-1B petition counts reflect administrative records of certified Labor Condition Applications and approved petitions; they are not assertions of permanent immigration, of granted visa status to specific workers, or of unmet labor demand. State-level concentration reflects a combination of industry geography (technology hubs in California and Washington, financial centers in New York, healthcare and academic centers across multiple states), employer headquarters versus actual worksite location, and certified petitions that may never result in a visa being issued or a worker arriving. Per-capita petition density is not normalized in this ranking; cross-state comparisons should consider total labor force size, industry mix, and the share of certified petitions that translate to actual H-1B status grants in USCIS data.
